Weaving
Techniques
Everything in Karpeta is born from passion. For raw materials and techniques but also for innovation. This is why we try to apply technology to artisanal knowledge, blending contemporaneity and tradition. Each product represents the union of innovation and hand-made, for pieces in which tradition is reinvented by design in perfect harmony that expresses the most contemporary style.

Handwoven Rugs
This type of process involves the use of a loom that is manually operated by weaving a series of vertical threads (warp) held taut by the loom itself with a series of horizontal threads (weft). This traditional method of hand-weaving requires expert skills to produce carpets of varying patterns and textures.

Tufted Rugs
Tufting involves the use of a “tufted gun” to attach carpet fibres to a cloth. Tufts of pile are inserted by following a pattern and then levelled off to create a uniform surface or a relief effect by alternating the height levels of the tuft. To finish the carpet a cotton backing is then glued onto the entire carpet. The tufting process is quick and allows flexibility when selecting shapes and colours, thus making it an ideal solution for customised carpets.

Handknotted Rugs
Handknotted rugs are produced using the ancient technique whereby the knots are tied by hand, one by one. The knotting technique, type of knot and its thickness give the rug unique characteristics.
The quality of the rug increases in proportion to the number of knots of which it is made up. Handknotted rugs are works of the highest artisanal manufacture.

Materials
The use of the highest quality raw materials is at the core of the company’s philosophy. The Karpeta team supervises the whole production process, choosing to reduce the environmental impact to a minimum. The use of only natural yarns and colours as well as methods of low environmental impact reflect the focus of our time on environmental themes, but without sacrificing aesthetics.
WOOL
We use only the finest quality pure New Zealand wool which guarantees a high resilience and, therefore, excellent durability.
SILK
This highly prized yarn has a characteristic sheen and is extremely soft to the touch. We use silks from China and India.
LINEN
Linen is made up of 70% cellulose. It is shiny, smooth and cool to the touch.
HEMP
This fibre comes from the stalk of the plant of the same name and is characterised by its rustic appearance and roughness to the touch. It is a tough resilient fibre and so does not absorb the dye uniformly.
VISCOSE
Viscose is an artificial fibre obtained from processing wood pulp from trees (or from other materials, such as cotton or straw). It has a silky sheen and is particularly soft to the touch.
TENCEL
Tencel is obtained from processing cellulose derived from wood, mainly Eucalyptus, and is an eco-sustainable alternative to the cultivation and extraction of cotton. It is particularly soft and silky to the touch, rather like viscose, and has excellent absorption and moisture management qualities.
